*INEC ‘HELPLESS’ AS EARLY CAMPAIGNS FLOUT ELECTORAL ACT, FAIRNESS RULES*

The drumbeats of the 2027 presidential race have started rolling across Nigeria, months before the official date allowed by law.

An investigation by _The Guardian_ shows that major political parties have begun grassroots mobilisation and subtle campaigns in different states, in direct violation of the provisions of the 2025 Electoral Act.

According to the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, official campaigning for Presidential and National Assembly candidates is not supposed to begin until *August 19*.

*APC* - All Progressives Congress  
*PDP* - Peoples Democratic Party  
*ADC* - African Democratic Congress  
*NDC* - National Democratic Congress  
*SDP* - Social Democratic Party  
*APM* - Allied Peoples Movement  

Party officials argue there is a “thin line” between mobilisation and actual campaigning, since there have been no open-air rallies or direct vote canvassing yet.

The electoral umpire has admitted it cannot enforce compliance at this stage.  
In a chat with _The Guardian_, INEC said it has *“no extant law to fall back on”* to compel parties to obey the campaign timetable.

Political observers warn that allowing some parties to dominate the political space early undermines fairness.  
They say big parties with more money will have an unfair advantage, while smaller parties with limited resources will struggle to catch up.
