Atiku: Obasanjo Created Allegations Against Me To Favour His Kinsman In 2027

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has rejected fresh allegations by former President Olusegun Obasanjo, describing them as an attempt to rewrite history and influence the political landscape ahead of the 2027 presidential election. In a statement issued by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, Atiku said Obasanjo acted unfairly by accusing him of bribing the late former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Ghali Umar Na’Abba, to impeach him, noting that the late lawmaker is no longer alive to respond to the claim.


Atiku questioned why the allegation was never made while Na’Abba was alive, arguing that no judicial ruling or official investigation had ever established such wrongdoing. He said if credible evidence existed, the Obasanjo administration had the authority to act at the time, making the renewed claim politically suspicious.


The former Vice President also linked the renewed accusations to the approaching 2027 elections, alleging that they were intended to damage his reputation and give political advantage to Obasanjo’s preferred candidate. He maintained that their long-standing political disagreement stemmed from his opposition to the former President’s alleged third-term agenda, which he said he resisted in defence of constitutional democracy.


Atiku said he would not be drawn into prolonged exchanges over past political disputes while Nigerians face economic hardship, insecurity, unemployment and rising living costs. He urged leaders to focus on addressing the country's current challenges, adding that while Obasanjo is free to support any candidate for 2027, such support should be expressed openly rather than through what he described as unverified historical allegations.
