Two years after the #EndBadGovernance protests in Nigeria, families of 12 protesters killed in Kano State say they are still waiting for justice and compensation despite the submission of an investigative committee's report. The demonstrations, held from August 1 to 10, 2024 over the rising cost of living, turned violent, with victims' relatives alleging that security agents shot and killed unarmed protesters. Amnesty International said at least 24 people were killed nationwide, with Kano recording the highest number of fatalities.


Relatives of the victims told Daily Trust that despite providing evidence before the Justice Lawal Wada Committee set up by the Kano State Government, none of its key recommendations has been implemented. They are demanding the prosecution of those responsible, compensation for families of those killed and injured, and support for people whose properties were destroyed during the unrest. Survivors also recounted living with permanent injuries, while grieving families described the lasting emotional and economic impact of the killings.


Amnesty International Nigeria condemned what it described as the government's continued failure to ensure accountability, alleging that no security personnel have been prosecuted over the deaths. The organisation also criticised the continued prosecution of some protesters, saying the authorities had ignored allegations of extrajudicial killings, torture and unlawful arrests linked to the demonstrations.


Chairman of the investigative panel, Justice Lawal Wada, confirmed that the committee submitted its report in January 2025, recommending compensation for victims, prosecution of offenders and broader social reforms. He said the unrest caused an estimated ₦11.47 billion in losses through looting and vandalism, adding that while some recommendations have begun to receive attention, compensation for victims is still pending. A government source also confirmed that the report has been forwarded to the governor's office and is awaiting implementation.
