HIGH FOOD PRICES NOW BIGGEST THREAT TO NIGERIA'S INFLATION FIGHT

Market dey hot, but pocket dey cold

KEY POINTS

Dr Muda Yusuf, CEO of CPPE, say Nigeria’s June 2026 inflation report get good news and bad news.

 inflation don stabilize small

Month-on-Month Drop from 1.75% to 1.66% Core inflation don ease

 e dey encouraging

The main wahala now na renewed acceleration in food inflation.

After brief moderation, food prices don resume upward trajectory again.

Dr Yusuf warn say this get serious economic and social implications:

Eroding household purchasing power

Worsening poverty and food insecurity

Weakening inclusiveness of govt reforms

Urban inflation:16.08% vs National 15.91% Urban MoM: Jump from 1.99% to 2.13%*

Cause? Increasing displacement from rural areas due to insecurity. More people dey move to cities = more demand for housing, transport, utilities = more inflation.

Dr Yusuf say Nigeria’s inflation problem na structural, not monetary

So MPC should not raise rates again Instead, govt need to:

- Expand food supply

- Improve logistics

- Reduce energy & production costs

- Address insecurity in farming communities

- Strengthen domestic value chains
