Police in Benue State have arrested two women for allegedly staging a fake kidnapping in an attempt to extort ransom from a family. The suspects, identified as Mary Torkuma of Akpehe in Makurdi and Evergreen Samuel from Abia State, were apprehended by operatives of the Command's Violence Crime Response Unit (VCRU) following an intelligence-led operation.

According to the Benue State Police Command, the incident was reported after Mary left home on July 12 to visit a friend in Makurdi. The following day, her mother in Lagos allegedly received a call from an unknown person claiming Mary had been kidnapped and demanding ransom. Investigators later tracked the suspects to a hotel in Makurdi, where preliminary findings indicated they had conspired to stage the abduction to fraudulently obtain money.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Cletus Nwadiogbu, warned residents against staging fake kidnapping incidents, describing such acts as criminal and a waste of security resources needed for genuine emergencies. He said the suspects remain in police custody, while investigations continue ahead of their prosecution.
