US government map of Africa mislabels every country at global conference

The United States Department of State has accepted responsibility after a map of Africa displayed during a presentation at the AIDS 2026 global conference in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, incorrectly labeled every country on the continent. The erroneous map misplaced several nations, including showing Nigeria in the Sahara Desert, relocating Mozambique to the Horn of Africa, and placing Ivory Coast on the opposite side of the continent. The mistake sparked widespread criticism after screenshots circulated on social media.


A Reuters review found the map carried a watermark indicating it had been created using OpenAI tools. The State Department said the slide was hastily edited by a team member before the presentation and acknowledged the confusion and misrepresentation caused, particularly to its African partners. OpenAI said it is investigating the report.


The presentation was delivered by U.S. global health envoy Jeff Graham during discussions on the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR). Despite the incident, the State Department said the conference discussions remained constructive and reaffirmed its commitment to global HIV/AIDS response, even as the U.S. continues to scale back some areas of international health spending following a broader review of foreign aid.
