*By:Sarki Halima Musa*
The Chawinga sisters have written Malawi into the history books Ranked 153rd in the world 116 places below pre-tournament favourites Nigeria Malawi shocked everyone to reach their first-ever WAFCON final after beating Algeria in a dramatic semi-final. Captain Tabitha Chawinga opened the scoring in the 33rd minute with a stunning overhead kick from a corner. One minute into added time, Temwa Chawinga rounded the goalkeeper to make it 2-0. Malawi went into halftime with the lead and a numerical advantage after Algerian defender Morgane Belkhiter was sent off for a last-man foul.
Malawi were also reduced to 10 players just before the break when Rose Kadzere saw red for a studs-up tackle. Algeria pulled one back through Ikram Adjabi on 60 minutes, but Tabitha restored the two-goal cushion in the 76th minute with a solo effort to kill the game. Temwa now leads Malawi’s scoring with 5 goals in the tournament, while Lyon star Tabitha has 4.
Algeria will play in Saturday’s third-place match. Malawi now wait for the winner of Wednesday’s other semi-final between hosts Morocco and Cameroon. The final is on Sunday, with a record $2 million prize for the winners. By reaching the last four, Malawi, Algeria, Morocco and Cameroon have all qualified for the 2027 Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
