*Explosions Greet Returnees as Wildfires Expose WWII Bombs in Le Porge*

 

Le Porge, a village of about 3,500 people on France’s southwest coast in Gironde, thought the worst was over after July’s wildfires forced almost everyone to evacuate. But when residents returned home they were met with explosions instead of quiet. On Monday, Civil Protection teams moved in and recovered more than 400 World War II shells and other munitions from the scorched ground. Officials said the operation went smoothly and the area is safer now, but further sweeps will continue as a precaution.


The fires this year were faster and more unpredictable than before, taking hundreds of firefighters to contain. Across France they burned through more than 160,000 hectares, the largest wildfire season on record. Around Le Porge the heat stripped away vegetation and topsoil, exposing ordnance buried since the 1940s and making some of it unstable enough to detonate. France still faces this regularly — more than 80 years after the war, unexploded bombs keep turning up after construction, floods, and now increasingly after wildfires.


Le Porge isn’t alone in facing pressure. Fires are still spreading in Greece and Italy. Central and Eastern Europe is bracing for temperatures 10 to 15 degrees Celsius above normal. In Hungary, the prime minister said the country’s only nuclear plant nearly shut down on Tuesday because water levels in the Danube dropped so low. 


Experts say Europe has always had wildfires, but climate change is making them hotter, bigger, and messier, and now they’re unearthing dangers from the past along with the new ones. Local authorities in Le Porge are urging people not to touch anything that looks like old metal or shells and to report it immediately while teams keep checking the land.
