Two people have died after heavy rainfall triggered flooding in parts of Damaturu, the Yobe State capital.

The victims, identified as 38-year-old Isa Haruna, popularly known as Mallam Matari, and 18-year-old Abba Kyari, reportedly drowned in the Pompomari area after an early morning downpour flooded Malari, Pompomari and nearby communities.

The Yobe State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) confirmed the incident, saying its search and rescue team, working with the Yobe State Fire Service, responded to distress calls but found both victims dead.

Their bodies were recovered and taken to the Accident and Emergency Unit of the General Sani Abacha Specialist Hospital in Damaturu.

SEMA has urged residents, especially those in flood-prone communities, to remain vigilant during heavy rainfall.

The agency advised the public to avoid flooded roads, drainage channels and waterways, while calling on parents and guardians to keep children away from rivers, streams, culverts and floodwaters, particularly as schools are currently on vacation.
