Flood: We’ll Pull Down Houses Senators, ‘Big Men’ Built On Waterways – Wike

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has ordered the immediate demolition of buildings obstructing designated waterways in Maitama and other flood-prone areas of Abuja. The directive followed recent flooding that submerged several houses in Maitama Extension, with residents blaming construction along waterways and blocked drainage channels.

Wike, who inspected affected areas on Tuesday, directed the FCT Development Control Department to begin the demolition immediately and continue through Saturday. He said the exercise would affect all structures built on designated water channels, regardless of the owners’ political influence or social status.

The minister said some of the affected properties belonged to senators and other wealthy individuals, stressing that no one would be protected from enforcement. He also blamed the worsening floods on blocked drainage channels, indiscriminatedumping of refuse, construction on waterways and poor maintenance of drainage infrastructure.

Wike acknowledged that climate change and heavy rainfall contributed to the flooding but said human activities had worsened its impact. He also directed FCT authorities to immediately desilt identified drainage systems and urged residents and traders to stop dumping waste into waterways.
