The Inspector General of Police, IGP Disu, has assured Nigerians of neutral and professional policing during the Osun State governorship election scheduled for August 15, 2026. He gave the assurance during a meeting with representatives of Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) to discuss security concerns ahead of the poll. The IGP said adequate officers would be deployed to all polling units across the state’s 30 local government areas, with special arrangements for persons with disabilities to vote safely.
He described the election as very significant because it is the last off-cycle election before the 2027 General Elections. He urged all stakeholders to support a peaceful and credible process that will boost public confidence in Nigeria’s democracy. According to the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Ani Iniedu, the IGP assured the CSOs that their concerns would be considered and necessary action taken. He also stressed the need for continued collaboration with CSOs through timely sharing of credible information and responsible communication before, during, and after the election.
The CSO delegation was led by Auwal Rafsanjani, Executive Director of CISLAC, and included representatives of YIAGA Africa, Nigerian Women Trust Fund, Kimpact Development Initiative, Centre for Journalism Innovation and Development, Partners West Africa, and CLEEN Foundation. The groups presented recommendations on voter protection, political violence, misinformation, and the inclusion of vulnerable groups in the electoral process.
The election will hold across all 30 LGAs in Osun with over 2 million registered voters. Fourteen political parties have fielded candidates for the exercise. The Nigeria Police Force said it remains committed to strengthening operational preparedness to protect democracy throughout the electoral period.
