*JESSICA OJI MAKES HISTORY, WINS NIGERIA’S FIRST WORLD U20 FIELD EVENT GOLD*

Nigerian athlete Jessica Oji made history on Sunday night after winning the gold medal in the women’s shot put at the World Athletics U20 Championships in Eugene, Oregon. It is the first time Nigeria has ever won gold in a field event at the championships. Oji delivered a remarkable series of throws, opening with 18.05m, followed by 18.08m, 17.95m, and 18.07m. All four throws were over 17.95m, showing the level of consistency and composure she showed despite her young age. In qualification she also threw 17.56m to qualify automatically and set a new Nigerian U20 record.


The win comes just weeks after she won silver at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. There she became the first Nigerian woman to win a Commonwealth medal in shot put since Vivian Chukwuemeka in 2006. Before Oji’s victory, Nigeria had only two field event medals in World U20 history: Esther Aghatise’s long jump silver in 2002 and Chinecherem Nnamdi’s javelin bronze in 2021. Jessica Oji is only 18 years old and a student at the University of Pennsylvania in the United States where she competes in NCAA events. Apart from shot put, she also holds the Nigerian U20 record in discus with a throw of 55.12m set in May 2026, and earlier this year she threw 18.50m at the Ivy League Championships to set new Nigerian and African records.


Analysts say Oji’s win could open a new chapter for field events in Nigeria. For many years the country has been known for sprints and relays, but with an athlete now competing and winning at the world level in throws, there are expectations that government and sponsors will begin to invest more in field events. The Athletics Federation of Nigeria described the win as "the beginning of a new journey" for Nigerian field athletes.


Oji is expected to return to NCAA and Ivy League competitions soon before beginning preparations for the senior World Athletics Championships next year. Her breakthrough season has already put her among the top young throwers in the world and given Nigeria a new face to watch in athletics.
