Kidnappers Beat Me For Reducing Ransom To N500,000 – Kogi Abductee

One of the 16 victims rescued from kidnappers in Kogi State, Victor Anyichie, has recounted how he was allegedly beaten mercilessly after telling his abductors that his family could only raise N500,000 as ransom. The victims were abducted last Sunday along the Ojuwo-Ajengo-Memarebo and Ojiwo-Itobe roads in Ofu Local Government Area.


Anyichie said the kidnappers demanded between N2 million and N100 million from the victims, before security operatives rescued them in a joint operation involving the police, Army, Navy, DSS, vigilantes and hunters. He said a local hunter was killed and a police officer injured during the operation. Another victim, Ngozi Stephen, said the kidnappers threatened to sell them to ritualists if their ransom demands were not met.


Another victim, Daniel, said he sustained a deep cut on his hand while trying to escape from the kidnappers. He explained that one of the abductors chased him and attacked him with a cutlass, leaving him bleeding throughout the night. He said the gang members spoke Igala, Fulani and Hausa, apparently to prevent the victims from understanding their conversations.


The Kogi State Commissioner of Police, Naziru Bello Kankarofi, confirmed that the victims were rescued along the Itobe-Achigili-Anyigba highway. He said security agencies were intensifying efforts to rescue other victims still being held by the kidnappers in the area.
