N187,200 To N3.25m: Military Gets New Salary Structure

The Federal Government has approved a new salary structure for personnel of the Nigerian Armed Forces, with increases ranging from 30 to 80 per cent across different ranks. The new pay, approved by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, will take effect from September 1, 2026, with about 250,000 military personnel expected to benefit. Under the new structure, a Private will earn N187,200 monthly, while a General will receive N3.25 million.


Personnel from Private to Staff Sergeant will receive an 80 per cent increase, while Colonels and Warrant Officers will get a 50 per cent rise. Officers above the rank of Colonel, including Brigadier-Generals, Major-Generals, Lieutenant-Generals and Generals, will receive a 30 per cent increase. The review is expected to raise the Armed Forces’ annual salary bill from N660 billion to N924 billion.


President Tinubu said the increase was designed to recognise the sacrifices of military personnel fighting terrorism, banditry and kidnapping across the country. However, civil society groups and some soldiers have said the increase must be measured against the rising cost of living, inflation, housing, food, education and healthcare. They called for regular reviews of military pay and improved welfare, including housing, insurance, pensions and support for soldiers’ families.


Despite the increase, reports indicate that Nigerian soldiers will still earn less than their counterparts in several African countries, including South Africa, Kenya, Togo, Niger, Benin Republic and Cameroon. Some serving personnel also expressed concern that the new pay may have limited impact because of the rising cost of basic necessities and service-related expenses. The Defence Headquarters said it aligns with the position of the Defence Minister, Christopher Musa, who described the salary review as a major boost to troop morale and welfare.
