Peter Obi Blames Tinubu Government for Rising Hardship


The 2027 presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has accused the Tinubu administration of worsening poverty and hunger across Nigeria.


Speaking in Onicha Local Government Area of Ebonyi State during the burial of the father of NDC senatorial candidate Linus Okorie, Obi said the economic hardship affects all Nigerians, regardless of political affiliation.


He urged citizens to hold leaders accountable and ensure their votes count in future elections.


Obi's remarks come as the World Bank's 2026–2032 Country Partnership Framework estimates that about 139 million Nigerians are living below the poverty line, while nearly 79 percent are either poor or at risk of falling into poverty.


Although the World Bank said recent economic reforms have improved macroeconomic stability, it noted that many households have yet to feel the benefits. The Presidency, however, said the poverty figures are modelled estimates and not an official headcount.


The report has intensified political debate ahead of the 2027 general elections.
