Put Military Budget On First-Line Charge, Ndume Tells FG

Senator Ali Ndume, representing Borno South, has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to place the annual budget of the Nigerian Armed Forces on First-Line Charge to prevent delays in funding military operations.

Ndume, a former Chairman of the Senate Committee on Army, said the current envelope budgeting system creates bureaucratic bottlenecks between the Ministries of Defence and Finance, affecting troops fighting terrorism and banditry.

Ndume commended President Tinubu for approving salary increases of between 30 and 80 per cent for some military personnel, describing the move as a boost to the morale of about 250,000 personnel.


He, however, said improved welfare must be accompanied by the prompt provision of arms, ammunition, logistics and modern technology needed by the Armed Forces to tackle insecurity effectively.

The senator called on the Federal Government to introduce direct statutory funding for the military from the Federation Account, similar to the arrangement for some government agencies.

He said placing the military budget on First-Line Charge would ensure timely access to funds and strengthen the Armed Forces’ capacity to respond quickly to security threats across the country.
