Senegal Names Patrick Vieira As National Team Head Coach

Senegal have appointed former France international Patrick Vieira as the new head coach of the national team, replacing Pape Thiaw, who was sacked in July following the team’s disappointing 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign.


The Senegal Football Federation announced Vieira’s appointment on Tuesday, saying he was unanimously selected by its Emergency Committee during a meeting on Monday. Thiaw was dismissed after Senegal exited the World Cup in the round of 32, suffering a 3-2 extra-time defeat to Belgium after surrendering a two-goal lead late in the match.


The federation said Vieira’s appointment is part of efforts to establish a high-level technical team as Senegal begins preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. The Teranga Lions remain the defending champions, although their status is currently subject to a case before the Court of Arbitration for Sport.


Vieira, who has been without a club since leaving his last coaching position in November, will take charge of a national team for the first time. His first major assignment wifricall be Senegal’s 2027 AFCON qualifying campaign, where the team will face Mozambique, Sudan and Ethiopia in Group J.
