*WAFCON 2026: Super Falcons Face Do-or-Die Clash Against Egypt*

Nigeria’s title defense got off to a nightmare start as Malawi stunned the Super Falcons 3-2 in the opener. The Chawinga sisters tore through Nigeria’s defense to go 2-0 up, before Ajibade and Kanu dragged the team back in stoppage time. Temwa had the last laugh though, grabbing her second to hand Malawi a historic win. Randy Waldrum’s side steadied the ship days later, grinding out a 1-0 victory over Zambia thanks to an early strike from Oshoala and a much tighter defensive display that revived their knockout hopes.


The Egypt game comes with problems. Tosin Demehin will miss out after her red card vs Zambia, and Jennifer Echegini is also out through suspension. It forces a midfield and defensive reshuffle, but Nigeria have enough quality in the squad to manage. Up front, all eyes are still on Oshoala. Her goal and movement vs Zambia reminded everyone why she’s Africa’s record winner. Ajibade continues to carry the armband with pride, pressing hard and popping up with big moments. At the back, Nnadozie shook off her mistakes against Malawi and stood tall vs Zambia with key saves that will be needed again.


Egypt are not here to make up the numbers. Sarah Essam is their main danger. She hasn’t had many touches in the tournament, but her speed means any mistake at the back could cost Nigeria dearly. The Cleopatras are expected to sit deep, stay compact, and look to break quickly.


For Nigeria, this is simple: win and you’re in control of qualification. Drop points and the Malawi loss comes back to haunt you. The coach must get the balance right without Demehin and Echegini, while the senior players must show why Nigeria remain queens of African football.
