Tinubu Was Not FBI Probe Target — Omokri Insists

Nigeria’s ambassador-designate to Mexico, Reno Omokri, has acknowledged that an FBI investigation involving individuals connected to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu took place, but maintained that Tinubu himself was not the subject of the investigation.


Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Sunday, Omokri said the controversy surrounding US law-enforcement records had been fueled by what he described as a misinterpretation of Tinubu’s relationship with funds that came under scrutiny by American authorities.


According to Omokri, Tinubu was working as an accountant at the time and held funds belonging to clients who were themselves under investigation by US authorities.


«“There was an investigation. Bola Ahmed Tinubu was not the subject of that investigation,” Omokri said.»


He explained that some of the funds were eventually subject to forfeiture after American authorities considered them suspicious, stressing that the action was against the accounts involved and not Tinubu personally.


Omokri also referred to a 2003 FBI document, which he said reflected background checks conducted on Tinubu and indicated that there was no criminal arrest record or outstanding warrant against him.


He declined to identify the individuals who were investigated, saying doing so could expose their families to unnecessary consequences.


The comments come amid renewed controversy over US law-enforcement records linked to an investigation dating back to the 1990s. The dispute involves 399 pages of records identified through Freedom of Information Act proceedings, with some documents reportedly redacted or withheld.


Omokri declined to discuss the specific contents of the documents because of ongoing litigation. He also opposed the release of potentially sensitive information, arguing that the records could contain biometric, family and financial details that could be exploited by political opponents.
