Martinez Blames Anger for Criticism of Manchester United Hierarchy

Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez has said that anger and frustration following the club’s defeat to Atletico Madrid led him to criticise the club’s hierarchy over its lack of investment in the transfer market.
Manchester United suffered a 2-0 defeat to Atletico Madrid in Spain on Tuesday in the UEFA Champions League. The club has also endured its worst start to a Premier League season in 40 years, increasing pressure on the team.
Martinez had earlier criticised the club’s technical director, Jason Wilcox, saying he had expected Manchester United to invest more in the squad during the transfer window. His comments came after the club finished third in the Premier League last season to secure a return to Europe’s top competition.
United signed three midfielders—Carlos Baleba, Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos—for approximately £150 million. However, the club’s spending was significantly lower than that of some of its Premier League rivals.
In a statement posted on social media, Martinez said his earlier remarks were driven by emotions following the defeat. He explained that his call for greater investment reflected the ambition needed to make Manchester United stronger and more competitive.
The Argentine international also acknowledged that everyone at the club, including himself, must maintain high standards. He expressed confidence in his teammates, manager Michael Carrick and the club’s staff, stressing that teamwork, ambition and commitment were essential to moving forward.
Meanwhile, pressure continues to mount on Carrick just months after he was appointed Manchester United’s permanent manager. His team will travel to face historic rivals Leeds United on Sunday before heading to Italy to take on Como in the Champions League on Wednesday.
